Original Tagalog sanskrit writing of the word "Tikbalang" !
The "Tikbalang" music group was formed sometime in 1972 as a bunch of "Hippies" trying to make a statement to the world and declaring that "All Things must Pass" so we better make good on this life we are in at the moment. Our name actually was given to us by some old folks in San Jose,Batangas after seeing us coming from the "bukid" with our clothes turned inside-out.The old folks said that we looked like a bunch of people who were spooked by a bunch of "Tikbalangs" !! It was because of being drenched in an afternoon downpour so we decided to flip our clothes to let it dry easier! From then on it stuck with us every time they saw us jamming at the plaza,Poblacion or sa bukid kina Tio Sano !!
Talk about Batangas, I just remembered our good old days in this old town of our grandfather, Lolo Ambo. I found a bit of information about San Jose from their website .....
The municipality now known as San Jose was once a wilderness. Wild animals such as buffalo, birds and flora abound this place. The aetas were the first inhabitants of the place. They started clearing some portions of the wilderness especially in the areas near the rivers. Several groups of settlers then drove these aetas to hinterlands and permanently occupied the place. They named it “Malaking Tubig”, referring to the big river crossing the central portion of their settlement. The Spaniards then colonized the Philippines. Bauan (a nearby town of the municipality of San Jose) was established in 1596 as an ecclesiastical unit administered by the order of Saint Agustin with “Malaking Tubig” as one of the barrios under its jurisdiction. Human population of Malaking Tubig started to grow and in 1754, Taal Volcano erupted destroying the original Bauan. And before its actual site could have been selected, Malaking Tubig was separated from Bauan. Its recognized leaders petitioned the Spanish authorities for the creation of Malaking Tubig to become a Pueblo (Town) which was granted to them on April 26, 1765. Two years later, Malaking Tubig was inaugurated into a pueblo where Ignacio de los Santos (also known as Ignacio Ona) became the Gobernadorcillo. Included in the inaugural jurisdiction were the present administrative unit, the Poblacionand the barrios of Labac, Dita, Ibabao, Dalipit and Makulot. The last six barrios were also separated through a petition which was approved on March 13, 1877 to become a new town of Cuenca. Since the foundation of the town of San Jose on April 26, 1765 up to the present time, there were already One Hundred Forty (140) appointed or elected heads (Capitanes, Alcaldes, Gobernadorcillos and Presidentes) of this Municipality.
Who would ever beleived that our family name is very closely related to the history of San Jose!! I guess it was meant to be since we are really very close with our relatives from our mother side.
Everyone had a thing or two to say and comment about how, what , where life is all about. And of course, the easiest way to be influenced was by listening to music on the radio like "DZUW, DZRJ" are just some of those stations we tuned in and picked-up a lot of good vibes. Not for long we tried to emulate or should I say copy the sounds we heard by playing it on the guitar and whatever instrument anyone could learn. We got so good at this that we started composing our own music complete with our own lyrics and melody! As a matter of fact we actually joined that famous DZRJ's"Battle of the Bands" contest. Would you beleive our group was called-in on the first round of the contest but unfortunately our band name was changed somehow from "Tikbalang" to "Egay & Boycie". How this happened is really strange since we do remember having Boycie and Egay to register our group for the auditions! (this was affirmed by Egay since the person who took in the info messed-up our group name with the names listed in the application which read as - "Egay & Boycie" !!) To make it short, by the time we found out about the mix-up, we were all chillin' out sa San Jose for that weekend! I guess it was fate that made us miss this opportunity to be heard as musicians! Who knows what would have happened if we did get that chance to show our skills and talent! Altho' we did get that chance when we sang at this Variety show on TV hosted by Manolo Favis , where we sang our famous "Kuliglig"! I will try to print out our long lost compositions one of these days so we could all sing along and enjoy our forgotten youth .
The musical journey has begun and up to this time we are experiencing, testing, experimenting all kinds of music as we go thru this wonderful journey called Life! We are going to introduce each member of the "Tikbalang" group thru some old pictures and may we promote a happy and joyful trip into memory lane!

As we look ahead thinking what life will bring we now ponder if what we anticipated was what we really expected life to be.
